How it is calculated

  • States set their own slabs. Some measure monthly salary, some half-yearly or yearly salary.
  • The constitution caps professional tax at ₹2,500 a year.
  • Some states charge a higher amount in one month so that the yearly total is round, for example February in Maharashtra and Karnataka and March in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Chhattisgarh (for salaried employees) do not collect professional tax from salary.

What is the maximum professional tax in a year?

Article 276 of the Constitution caps it at ₹2,500 per person per year.

Do women pay professional tax in Maharashtra?

Women earning up to ₹25,000 a month are exempt in Maharashtra. Above that, the same slab as men applies.

Which states have no professional tax on salary?

Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa do not levy it. Chhattisgarh exempts salaried employees.
